Back to Music: Starting the Year with Confidence and Joy

As summer winds down and calendars begin to fill, many families are settling back into familiar routines. While returning to school, work, and activities can feel busy, it’s also the perfect opportunity to rediscover the joy of making music.

Whether you’re a returning student, beginning your very first lessons, or an adult finally making time for yourself, a new music year is full of exciting possibilities. Here are 6 simple ways to make the transition back to lessons and practice smooth and enjoyable. Even choosing one is a fantastic place to start!

practice1. Start Small and Stay Consistent

You don’t need to jump back into long practice sessions right away. In fact, short, focused practice is often more effective than trying to fit in an hour all at once.

Try aiming for:

Beginners: 5–10 minutes most days
Elementary students: 10–20 minutes
Intermediate and advanced students: 20–40 minutes

Consistency builds confidence. Even a few minutes each day helps develop skills and creates lasting habits.

2. Put Music on the Calendar

Just like homework, sports, or dance classes, practice works best when it becomes part of the weekly routine.

Choose a regular time that fits your schedule:

Before dinner
Right after school
Before bedtime
During a morning coffee for adult students

When practice becomes a habit instead of a decision, it’s much easier to stay motivated.

3. Create a Welcoming Practice Space

A comfortable, inviting environment makes a big difference.

Keep your piano or keyboard clear and ready to play. Have music books, pencils, and a water bottle nearby. For singers, make sure there’s enough room to stand comfortably and breathe freely.

A tidy, dedicated music space sends the message that music is an important and enjoyable part of everyday life.

4. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfectionpractice

Learning music is a journey. Some weeks everything clicks, while other weeks require patience and persistence.

Instead of focusing only on the finished performance, celebrate the small victories:

Learning a new rhythm
Singing with more confidence
Playing a difficult measure correctly
Practising one extra day this week

Every small step adds up to meaningful growth. We know the small successes are really the big ones!

5. Listen to Music Every Day

One of the best ways to become a better musician is simply to listen.

Explore different styles, attend local concerts, sing along in the car, or create a family playlist filled with favourite songs. The more music becomes part of everyday life, the more naturally musical skills begin to grow. Did you know even a fun, family dance party counts? Try it!

6. Remember Why You Started

Music lessons are about so much more than learning notes and rhythms. They build confidence, creativity, discipline, problem-solving skills, and self-expression. They also provide a wonderful outlet for relaxation and joy in an increasingly busy world. Music gives space for emotional freedom and expression which is valuable for students of all ages.

There will be weeks when practice feels easy and weeks when life gets in the way—and that’s perfectly normal. What matters most is continuing to come back to the piano bench or the singing studio with curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Let’s make this year one filled with confidence, creativity, and the joy of music! Thank you for choosing Forte School of Music for your music education. Here’s to a Wonderful Music Year!
