Stephanie James is one of our fabulous music teachers at Forte School of Music. Stephanie teaches singing, piano, and music theory.
Her musical training:
Stephanie grew up in the Cowichan Valley and began piano lessons at the age of 4, followed by singing lessons at the age of 6. As a child, Stephanie’s parents were surprised when she was the one who asked them if she could begin piano lessons, and she purchased her first piano at the age of 10. Choosing music as her path, she completed her BMus (voice & music education) with distinction at UVic, as well as her BC College of Teachers certification in Music Education, and Royal Conservatory of Music studies in piano, singing, and theory.
In her teaching:
As a teacher, Stephanie is known for being a calm and extremely positive motivator for her students. Her goal is to help her students connect with music in a way that enriches their life and instills the confidence to achieve more than they thought possible. Stephanie is also passionate about exploring the history and context behind music with her students and connecting the “classical/traditional” concepts to how they have impacted modern artists and styles.
A little known musical fact about Stephanie:
One of Stephanie’s favourite songs is “Just a Girl” by Gwen Stefani of No Doubt. While musically she loves the bass line of this song, she also appreciates the lyrical sarcasm and sees Gwen Stefani as a role model and a unique, confident female artist.
On opening Forte:
One of Stephanie’s favourite things about opening Forte School of Music in downtown Duncan has been meeting and connecting with people in such a vibrant community. She has been inspired by how much music is in and around the Cowichan Valley and is excited to be a part of it.
